Abstract:
To transíate a text into another language it is a difficult task, because it is not always simple neither feasible to find the most accurate idiomatic and/or linguistic expressions that would reflect the ideas the original author wants to communicate. In the Spanish versión of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV), there are some mistakes not attributable, in our opinión, to misprints since they reflect a certain stance not explained anywhere throughout the text. The aim of the present work was to point out some of these problems intending to provide some clearness and to help to prevent, insofar as this is possible, any diagnostic mistakes that might stem from the usage of the DSM-IV in its current Spanish versión. We have not made an exhaustive review; our intention it is just to alert the many Spanish users of the DSM- IV about the difficuities they could encounter if they do not have into account the original text. We wish and hope that this work encourages the responsibles for the Spanish translation to check their work and to offer us, the sooner the better, a nnore accurate versión of the DSM-IV.
