Decision making in adults with autism: The role of ecological executive dysfunctions

Abstract:
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by presenting problems such as executive dysfunction and behavioral problems. Within the executive functions (EF) a warm area and a cold area can be differentiated; the latter is the most studied, although recent research points to a primary deficit in warm EFs or decision-making in ASD. In the present study, the symptomatology analyzed that accompanies ASD influencing «hot» EFs, or decision-making capacity. The sample consisted of 31 adults with intellectual disability and ASD, with an average mental age of 4.74. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that the executive dysfunction, more specifically the mechanisms of inhibition (impulsive system), was a significant predictor of decision making by adults with ASD.

Spanish version of the Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI): Psychometric properties in adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disability

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI) in adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Intellectual Disability (ID). A total of 121 adults with ASD and ID were recruited and informant ratings on the ADEXI were collected to investigate the factor structure, as well as reliability and validity. The results showed that we could replicate the two-factor structure (i.e., working memory and inhibition) that had been found in a previous study of adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The two ADEXI subscales were shown to have high internal consistency and significant associations were found between the ADEXI and the Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX), another executive function rating instrument. Conclusively, the ADEXI appear to be a valid instrument for assessing executive function deficits in adults with ASD and ID.

Abstract: The impact of internalizing symptoms and executive dysfunctions on academic performance in primary school

This study examines the impact of executive dysfunctions and the internalized symptoms on academic performance in primary school. A sample of 87 children of both sexes was randomly selected (mean = 10.80; SD = .73). The sample was classified in three groups according to academic performance (high, average and low), and was evaluated by means of the Raven´s Progressive Matrices (Raven, 1995), the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function Self-Report (BRIEFSR; Guy et al., 2004) and the Youth Self Report for ages 11-18 (YSR/11-18; Achenbach, 1991). The results show that a lower academic performance is associated with lower cognitive skills, and a presence of executive dysfunctions, especially in control and internalized symptomatology, in particular somatic disorders and social introversion. The inclusion in educational facilities of transversals programs of stimulation of executive functioning could help to reduce levels of academic failure.

Abstract: Executive functioning in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): An ecological perspective of the differential profiles between the combined and the inattentive types

This study aims to define the executive dysfunctions in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and, specifically, in the inattentive and combined subtypes. Moreover, it intends to determine whether either the symptoms of inattention or those of hyperactivity/impulsivity of the disorder are related to these dysfunctions. Using the BRIEF (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function), a total of 87 children were assessed and classified in three groups: 29 children with inattentive ADHD, 29 children with combined ADHD, and a control group of 29 children without ADHD. The results show that the children with ADHD differ from the control group in all dimensions of the BRIEF. The differences between ADHD types were more marked in behavioral than in cognitive aspects, the combined type being most affected. Furthermore, inattention symptoms appeared to be more specifically related to the BRIEF.

Abstract: A differential study of the recognition of simple and cognitive emotions by autistic mentally retarded and normal adults

Groups of autistic (n = 17) and non autistic retarded young adults (n = 17), individually matched for CA, verbal MA and sex, together with a group of normal young (n = 17), matched for CA and sex, were tested for their ability to recognize facial expressions of emotions. The autistic subjects were relatively impaired in appreciation of emotional expressions. They recognize equal the basic and cognitive emotions. However, they use more time in perception of the cognitive emotions.
